#KSPDMonth at Reston National Golf Course

Throughout KemperSports Player Development Month, we’re proud to highlight our facilities and teams from coast to coast who are going above and beyond to inspire a love and passion for golf in others and using the game to positively impact their local communities.

Powered by a robust curriculum and calendar of programming designed with every golfer in mind, Reston National Golf Course in Reston, VA is one of the country’s best in welcoming beginners to the game, particularly through the growth and success of its junior golf programming. Led by General Manager and Director of Player Development Shaun Strand, the recipient of the 2022 Mid-Atlantic PGA Section Player Development Award, the team also launched a partnership with Reston’s Center for Veterans in Transition last year to create a program for wounded veterans to help them reacclimate to civilian life using the game of golf. Nationally, people are starting to take notice too as the team took home the 2023 National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) Player Development Award, an award bestowed upon an NGCOA member golf course, organization or individual who has implemented true and tested player development programs, providing effective return-on-investment and an overall welcoming atmosphere for new golfers of all ages.

Get a sample of what Reston National has cooking up during #KSPDMonth and year round:

Summer Golf Camps: Reston National’s summer golf camps are the biggest player development program it runs. The talented teaching staff offers full-day, half-day, advanced players’, and female-only camps, which cater to participants age 5–17. Each individual is adequately challenged while learning how to play golf through instruction and team-building activities on the driving range, short game areas as well on course. In 2022 alone, there were 744 attendees, including 318 beginners!

PGA Jr. League: With the support of Strand and Reston National ownership, Reston hosts PGA Jr. League events on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, shutting down the entire front nine to create the best possible experience for players and their families.

Junior Academy Group Classes: Junior Academy is a program designed to introduce new juniors to golf and help beginner players develop the foundational skills of a solid swing. Through interactive activities, participants can look forward to learning both full-swing and short-game techniques in a fun environment. The two-level program consists of Bridies (Level 1) and Eagles (Level 2), with graduating students showing they are confident with basic golfing knowledge before progressing further. Over the past two years, they’ve seen participation jump over 30 percent!

Girls Team Mentorship Program: This unique program gives girls the ability to learn from a female in the golf industry. Reston National strives to inspire leadership through mentorship and team building. Participants receive a combination of instruction on the range as well as on the golf course.

Junior Tour Series: The FedEx Cup youth tournament series provides opportunities for young players to earn points and gain entry into the Reston Junior Open. To make it a memorable experience, they invite spectators – families especially – to come out and support their children as they compete in either individual stroke play or two-man scramble formats. Ultimately, the goal is to give junior golfers the chance to not only to improve their skills but also become more confident playing on higher levels of competition.
