Sequoyah National Golf Club Announces Complete Bunker Renovation and Regrassing Project
Capillary Concrete Bunkers and Zeon Zoysia Planned for Improvements
CHEROKEE, NC (January 21, 2020) – Sequoyah National Golf Club, The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and KemperSports announced that the course will undergo a complete bunker renovation and regrassing project beginning in March 2020 with the direction of Robert Trent Jones II Design. The club will be installing capillary concrete bunkers throughout and converting the current fairways, tees and green surrounds to Zeon Zoysia to provide the best playing conditions possible year-round on the award-winning Robert Trent Jones II layout.
“We’re investing in the future of the golf course by upgrading the playing surfaces and bunkers” said Sequoyah National golf board chairman Curtis Wildcat. “With these improvements, Sequoyah National solidifies its place as one of the best mountain courses in the southeast.”
Sequoyah National will remain open for play throughout the process and guest experience should be minimally impacted with the exception of a few holes each day. The anticipated completion for the project is July 2020. Zeon Zoysia turf was chosen for its tolerance to the cool mountain climate and its resilience to summer heat. The outcome of the changes should produce a better playing surface year-round.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 2009, Sequoyah National is ranked No. 39 in Golfweek’s 2020 list of the “Best Casino Courses in the U.S.”. Located just 45 minutes from Asheville in Cherokee, North Carolina, the course is open to the public daily and serves as an amenity for guests at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort four miles away. Nestled among the oak, fir and flowering valleys of the Great Smoky Mountains, the course plays over 6600 yards from the back tees to a par 72 and presents panoramic jaw dropping vistas of the surrounding landscape on every hole. The course is owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and managed by Northbrook, Illinois-based KemperSports.

Awesome post. My husband and I want to plant some grass in our currently dirt yard, and your article had great tips to help us choose the best grass for our needs. I liked how you said to consider Zoysia turf Brisbane, as it has average shade tolerance and is high quality while still being low maintenance. Thanks; we’ll keep this in mind when choosing grass for our yard.
