KemperSports Leads Ambitious Renovation Project at Harborside International
KemperSports will lead an effort to renovate and update both golf courses at Harborside International Golf Center, located on the South Side of Chicago. The ambitious golf course improvement plan will improve playability and conditioning of the golf course by implementing industry-leading bunker technology throughout both courses. The project, which will not interfere with play during the 2017 golf season, will further highlight the natural beauty of Harborside’s native areas and wildlife, and expand the cityscape and Lake Calumet vistas throughout the iconic urban Chicago golf destination.
The bunkers will see a significant upgrade with more consistent conditioning for players with the utilization of Better Billy Bunker technology, yielding improved drainage, more cost-effective maintenance and fewer washouts. The renovation project will also strategically remove a number of out-of-play bunkers, making the course more playable for higher-handicap players while still presenting a challenge for highly skilled players.
“We are confident that this renovation will set Harborside International on a path for continued success,” said KemperSports CEO Steve Skinner. “We look forward to remaining Chicago’s Home for Golf for many years to come and we are excited for our loyal golfers to come enjoy an enhanced experience at Harborside. This project will solidify Harborside’s reputation as the finest-conditioned public golf course in the City.”
The guest experience will remain uninterrupted throughout the renovation project. This spring, guests will be able to enjoy a staff-favorite “StarPort” routing, which combines the scenic and dramatic back nines of the Starboard and Port courses.
Owned by the Illinois International Port District and managed by KemperSports since 2013, Harborside International Golf Center was designed by well-known Chicago-based golf course architect Dick Nugent. The development has been recognized for its positive environmental transformation as Nugent converted 500-acres of a former landfill into two, highly-regarded links-style layouts. Both courses maintain national rankings from golf industry publications.
